Last Updated: May 8, 2015
I am a physician specializing in Internal Medicine, practicing at a multi-specialty clinic in eastern Washington state. I was born in Romania and I graduated from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy with an MD degree in 1996. In 2000, I completed a 5-year residency in Infectious Disease at Victor Babes Hospital in Bucharest, Romania. At the end of 2001 I came to the United States and in 2004 I earned a Masters of Science degree in Human Nutrition (currently they are offering an MS in Nutrition and Wellness), with a focus on vegetarian nutrition, from Andrews University, in Michigan. In 2007 I completed a 3-year Internal Medicine residency at Yale University and the affiliated Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut.
I am certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
I have a strong interest in promoting healthy lifestyle choices and weight management. As part of my practice, I run a small weight loss clinic.
Purpose Of This Site
I see everyday patients that suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, arthritis and so on. There is a lot that can be done to prevent the impact of these diseases if we make early and lasting lifestyle changes. This is the primary reason for and the foundation of this website.
A regular regimen of moderate intensity physical activity can go a long way to prevent or even reverse chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. I am a big fan of exercise, and I wish more of my patients and people in general would tap daily into this veritable fountain of youth. As you browse my site, you will discover a lot of resources meant to help you exercise more.
Next to regular exercise, a healthy diet is the most powerful prevention tool against chronic disease we have. We know today that at last 25% of coronary heart disease and heart attacks, for example, could be prevented if people would eat a plant-based diet. This is why I wrote a number of articles on the topic of nutrition.
I have a passion for health calculators, and I have created or adapted a number of such tools - from diabetes and heart attack risk calculators to basal metabolic rate and calories burned through exercise estimators. Feel free to use these calculators and I encourage you to discuss the results with your healthcare provider.
Excessive weight and obesity is becoming fast the number one public health issue in the western world. Every other patient that I see is overweight or obese. Weight loss regimens have discouragingly low rates of success. To assist my visitors who have trouble with excessive weight, I have created an online weight loss program. I wish I had more time to invest in it. The way it stands now, it allows the creation of a personalized account which in turn allows tracking calorie intake through diet, calorie expenditure through exercise, and weight monitoring. Time permitting, I am planning to incorporate educational and motivational features into this program in the future. You're welcome to try it on an "as is" basis right now. One recent addition is the foods calorie counter - a tool that counts calories and major nutrients in daily foods.
I have also included a section for health professionals. Practicing physicians everywhere use diagnostic codes developed by the World Health Organization ( ICD codes) to document their patient encounters and procedures. I have developed several ICD code search tools that may come in handy for those interested.
